Overheating Can Damage Your Computer

Overheating can be a very damaging issue when it comes to computers. Overheating usually begins with a decrease in performance, or a computer running slower than normal. The problem is that more catastrophic issues usually occur, before the overheating problem is found to be the cause of these slowdowns and performance issues. Many times the computer quits working completely. The CPU, the motherboard, or some other component fails due to the overheating issue. We will talk about some of the reasons computers overheat and what you can do to prevent this from happening.

Component Failure

The first reason for a computer to overheat is due to a component failure or malfunction. This may be noticeable if you can hear a noisy fan. On the other hand, if the fan is not working you may hear nothing at all. In addition to the fan, your computer uses a heat sink to transfer heat away from the CPU. While the heat sink can go bad, this is a rare occurrence. The bigger issue is a paste that is placed between the heat sink and the CPU. This paste breaks down over time and begins to harden. Once the paste hardens, it does not remove the heat from the CPU properly. Once again, you have no way of knowing the condition of this paste in your computer.

The second reason for a computer to overheat is from something blocking the air that needs to circulate through the computer. The most common cause of blockage is dust. This can be visible from the outside of the computers sometimes. If you see the vents clogged with dust on your computer make sure to clean it. However, many times the dust builds up inside the computer where you can’t see it. This can be fixed by opening the computer and removing the dust. You must know what you are doing if you want to try this yourself. Many times people can cause more damage messing around inside their computer than actually fixing the problem. It is recommended you have your computer opened by someone who absolutely knows what they are doing.

One of the most overlooked reasons for blocking circulation occurs in laptops. Many times laptops are designed to draw in air from the bottom. When you lay the laptop on a surface like a bed, the feet are unable to keep a space between the laptop and the surface. This cuts off all the air circulation, and can be very damaging to laptops.

The last cause of overheating is caused by pushing the computer too hard. Many games today use a lot of power from your computer. If your computer is not set up to handle these high demands, it can cause the computer to work harder than it is capable of. This can also occur using other intensive programs, or a combination of high demand programs at the same time. If you try to run a computer that was not designed to run at maximum performance for extended time periods, this will cause heat issues.
